far be it from me to complain.\u00a0 It does, however, make for some, shall we say, thrilling forrays to capture its beauty in photographs.<\/p>\n<p>I broke down this year and invested in new, very heavy-duty winter boots.\u00a0 Hunting boots from Danner, with 1,000 gram Thinsulate, to be exact.\u00a0 They are a thing of beauty and I love them.\u00a0 But even they were no match for this latest arctic blast.\u00a0 They got a real test when we took a trip to the local nature preserve after the first in the series of snowstorms came through; an hour and a half in the sub-zero morning, my feet had had enough.\u00a0 Running and skiing don&#8217;t compare to standing around in deep snow so even these extreme boots are going to be\u00a0stuffed with heated socks or something the next time we go out in such deadly weather.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the cold toes, I was still\u00a0thrilled to get out.\u00a0 There wasn&#8217;t much going on there in terms of wildlife, but I enjoyed\u00a0shooting some landscapes of the snowy river, and the stretch of\u00a0white-capped teasels was good practice shooting white-on-white.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Rouge River\" src=\"http:\/\/sciurusniger.smugmug.com\/photos\/453273237_nuPN2-M.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"398\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Rouge River\" src=\"http:\/\/sciurusniger.smugmug.com\/photos\/453277396_J8VRz-M.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"398\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"White-capped teasels\" src=\"http:\/\/sciurusniger.smugmug.com\/photos\/453277300_HnY9g-L.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We weren&#8217;t seeing much of the hawks during this time; most all the furred and small, feathered wilds were sticking very close to home.\u00a0 The red-tail did show up early in the week,\u00a0and though very close to the patio I\u00a0managed to nail\u00a0it in the heartbeat it took for it to launch and then disappear behind one of the big pine trees.\u00a0 I had the camera set for\u00a0a stick-picking shot and was actually very surprised to have gotten only wing blur here.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Red-tailed hawk\" src=\"http:\/\/sciurusniger.smugmug.com\/photos\/454560082_E9tq8-M.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"563\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When sub-zero temperatures grip, the brief moments of intermittent sunshine begin to create fantasies of ice as the snow slowly melts off the roofs of the houses.\u00a0 Often, this light would come late in the afternoon, affording me the chance to indulge my artsy-fartsy eye and try to capture some of what is my personal favorite\u00a0in Nature&#8217;s bag of breathtaking tricks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Evening Ice\" src=\"http:\/\/sciurusniger.smugmug.com\/photos\/454558845_kw32v-M.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"563\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Embracing Winter\" src=\"http:\/\/sciurusniger.smugmug.com\/photos\/455066944_L5nUY-M.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"563\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"More of Winter's grip\" src=\"http:\/\/sciurusniger.smugmug.com\/photos\/455553943_AWpMh-L.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Arctic Evening\" src=\"http:\/\/sciurusniger.smugmug.com\/photos\/456068591_iWyt8-L.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Arctic Evening III\" src=\"http:\/\/sciurusniger.smugmug.com\/photos\/456068047_a3HJF-M.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"563\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And what would Winter be without a visit from the Travel Gnome?\u00a0 In drag.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Travel Gnome in drag\" src=\"http:\/\/sciurusniger.smugmug.com\/photos\/457309818_gh2QV-M.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"563\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">As I write this particular piece, the bitter cold snap continues and I continue to chronicle the lengthing icicles, both on houses and furry tails.\u00a0 It occurs to me once again that living where there are four, real seasons is one reason that I&#8217;m never bored or at a loss for ideas to continue to work on my photography.\u00a0 I know that to some people, ice may be just ice, squirrels or hawks may be just squirrels or hawks, but as the natural cycle moves &#8217;round its annual wheel, it provides a never-ending rotation of unique players, and each is\u00a0worthy of attention.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And I&#8217;m both grateful and most often simply excited to be able to do this.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;World&#8217;s use is cold, world&#8217;s love is vain, world&#8217;s cruelty is bitter bane;
